CANFIELD - Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, for Lalo Berezo, 86, who passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
Lalo was born Jan. 21, 1928, in Youngstown, a son of the late Frank and Pura (Paz) Berezo.
Lalo graduated from North High School and attended Youngstown State University. He was a labor liaison for United Way. Lalo was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Youngstown and was past president of Centro Hispano Unidos. He won the Golden Gloves title in 1945, and was inducted into the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame and The Legends of Leather Hall of Fame. In 1998, he was named YWCA Man of the Year.
Lalo is survived by his wife, the former Josephine Garcia, whom he married June 20, 1950; two sons, Lalo (Mary) Berezo of Pittsbugh and Frank (Lou) Berezo of The Villages, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Scott, Jaimie, Alison, Matthew, Nicole, Daane, and Jodie; two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Griffyn; a daughter-in-law, Patti Berezo of St. Louis; a sister, Pearl (Ralph) Sinistro of Boardman; and a brother, John (Margo) Berezo of West Middlesex, Pa.
Lalo was preceded in death by a son, Michael Berezo; daughter-in-law Alene Berezo; a sister, Linda Berezo; and a brother, Frank Berezo.
Family and friends may pay their respects Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
