YOUNGSTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Church for Lawrence E. Gilboy, 71, who died Tuesday evening at Hospice House.
Lawrence was born Jan. 11, 1943, in Youngstown, to Lawrence D. and Marion Sweeney Gilboy.
He was a 1960 graduate of Ursuline High School. Lawrence attended John Carroll University, Georgetown University and Youngstown State University, where he received his bachelor's degree in Dducation. He also received his master's degree from Westminster College.
Lawrence taught for 32 years for the Youngstown City Schools. He began his teaching career at Chaney High School, spent many years at the Rayen School, where he was also the athletic director, taught at South High School, and ended his career at Volney Rogers, where he retired in 2001.
He received several awards through out his career. He received the Martha Jennings Scholars Award, the Governor's Award for Youth Education, and the Beacon of Hope Award.
Lawrence was also a Golf Pro at the former Leffingwell Golf Course and a member of the National Education Association.
He is survived by his wife, the former Julia DeBrosky, whom he married in July of 1969; three daughters, Melissa Rogers of Youngstown, Laurie (Tim) Minich of Canfield, and Kathleen (Steven) Lindow of Canfield; a son, L. Frank (Michelle) of Univeristy Heights; a sister Marianne Nehr of Ramsey, N.J.; eight grandchildren, Tara, Theresa, Abby, Aidan, Jackson, Caitlyn, Tucker, and Cameron; and a niece and nephew, Marie and Stephen.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Family and friends may call Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
The family would especially like to thank nurse Yvonne at Cornerstone Home Health for her exceptional care during Lawrence's illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514.
Professional arrangements are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel.
