STRUTHERS - Lawrence W. Yurcich, 86, died on Sept. 26, 2012, at home.
"Larry" was born on April 20, 1926, in Struthers, where he grew up and graduated from Struthers High School. He was a son of Stephen and Anna Belichick Yurcich.
Larry served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Ricksey from 1944 to 1946. His responsibilities included shipboard meal preparation and included specialized training in the Cook and Baker's School in Jacksonville, Fla. When World War II ended, he was discharged from the U.S. Navy and returned to Struthers.
Larry worked as a line serviceman for the Ohio Edison Company for 35 years. As a Class A lineman, he answered emergency power outage calls, repaired downed lines, and reconnected electrical services for customers.
In December of 1980, he climbed a 210 foot transmission tower to rescue a despondent man. Larry cleared the 138, 000 volt electrical line and carried the man safely to the ground. Commendations were received from the Ohio Edison Company and the city of Struthers. He retired in 1988.
Larry was an active lifelong member of St. Nicholas Church Christ Our Savior Church. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Struthers Council of the Knights of Columbus Council 4224, the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild and the Altar and Rosary. He used his electrical skills and knowledge to lay out and install the electrical wiring for the annual church festival. He belonged to the VFW Lodge 3538, the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge No. 66 and Harmony Lodge No. 465.
A devoted husband and father, a loyal friend, and an avid golfer and fisherman, he will be missed by friends and family who were recipients of his generosity and kindness.
Besides his wife of 58 years, the former Ruth Clara Lind, he leaves a daughter, Mary Lind Crowe Joseph of Cleveland; and two sons, Regis of New Jersey and William Michele of Cuyahoga Falls. He leaves five grandchildren, Elizabeth Crowe, Katherine Crowe, J. Patrick Crowe, Emily Yurcich and Andrew Yurcich. He also leaves two sisters, Mary Catherine Yurcich of Poland and Barbara Wilmer Richard of California.
Besides his parents, his brother, Steve, precedes him in death.
