Leonard Polas

POLAND - Prayers will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Church, for Leonard C. Polas, 91, who passed away Sunday morning at his home in Poland with his family at his side.
Mr. Polas was born Dec. 31, 1921, in Hillsville, Pa., the son of Ben and Flora (Chutz) Polas. He moved to Lowellville in 1923 and had resided in Poland since 1959.
He was a graduate of Lowellville High School and received his Bachelors of Business Administration from Ohio University in 1948.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, as a First Lieutenant in the 376th Harbor Craft Company in the Pacific Theater and in occupied Japan.
Mr. Polas joined the Internal Revenue Service in 1950 and retired in 1983. Following his retirement, he joined Romeo & Associates as a Tax Consultant until 2006. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish and served as a lector, as well as on the Finance Committee and the Home & School Association.
He was an avid reader and frequent visitor to the Poland Library. He enjoyed being with his family and was especially fond of babies and dogs.
Preceding him in death, besides his parents, were his sister, Rose Ambrosia; and his brother Don A. Polas.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 54 years, Janet Pozzuto. In addition to his wife, he leaves his children, Gina D'Apolito (Dr. Jim D'Apolito) of Boardman; Anita Pokorny (Matt) of Stow, Chuck Polas (Laura Mapes) of Quechee, Vt.; Dr. Phyllis Polas (Dr. Tom Pommering) of Columbus; Judy Dashiell (Paul) of Williamsburg, Va.; Marcia Polas of Denver, and Chrissy Henige (Jon) of New Lothrop, Mich. He also leaves 16 grandchildren, Nick, Elizabeth, Francesca, and Natalie D'Apolito, Alexa and Jillian Pokorny, Ben and Sam Polas, Josie, Emma and Nate Pommering, Hayley and Madeleine Dashiell, and Nolan, Quin and Colton Henige.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley or Holy Family Parish.
Family and friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m at the funeral home.
