YOUNGSTOWN - Prayers will be held Saturday at 9:45 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Leonard James Schiavone who passed on to eternity April 10, 2012, at the age of 93.

Beloved husband of almost 65 years to Vera Toriello, he was the devoted father of Anna Marie Newman Chris of Poland, Carmie Buchanan Buck of Devon, Pa., Antionette Schiavone Hugh Bufkin of Atlanta, Leonard Schiavone Deb of Keller, Texas and Carmine Schiavone Lisa of Schwenksville, Pa.; the loving grandfather of 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson; brothers, Dr. Guido Schiavone and Emil Schiavone; sister, Yole Conte; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carmine and Anna Valerio Schiavone; brother, Oscar Schiavone; and twin sisters, Isada Colla and Clara Merlo.

Leonard was born Sept. 3, 1918, in Montaguto, Italy, and came to Boliver, N.Y. in 1927. Two years later he relocated to Youngstown, where he attended Austintown Fitch High School and was a star athlete in football and basketball, a gold medalist placing first in the county for the 100 and 200 yard dash in track and field, and a Golden Glove recipient in boxing. In 2006, Leonard was honored at mid-field before Austintown Fitch's season opener for his accomplishments on the gridiron for the Fitch Falcons. Over the years, he never lost his love of sports and became an avid bowler, lover of golf, and especially enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.

Leonard was a decorated World War II Army Air Corp veteran of the European Theater, having successfully flown over 30 missions in a B-24 Bomber of the 66th Bomb Squadron in the 44th Bomb Group. Of his many honors, his most cherished was the Distinguished Flying Cross. Another special honor was his selection to place the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Veterans Day 2008.

He co-owned Schiavone United Family Foods on Mahoning Avenue, where he provided the community with quality food and service for 40 years. He served as president of the United Grocers Association and United Family Foods Association for multiple terms, and was one of the original parishioners of Immaculate Heart of Mary, before he moved to Boardman and joined St. Christine Parish. For 65 years, he was a faithful member of the American Legion, and served as Commander of Post No 301 for two terms.

Leonard will always be remembered for his love of family, friends, and good Italian food. He never met a stranger who didn't become a friend, or most likely receive and invitation to his and Vera's home for a wonderful meal.

Family and friends may call Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Legion Post No 301, Gifts To The Yanks, 3652 Oakwood Ave., Austintown, OH 44515.
