AUSTINTOWN ? Prayers will begin Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Louis R. LaCava Retired Chief Warrant Officer W-4 U.S. Navy, 74, who died suddenly Friday morning at his home of an apparent heart attack.
Louis was born March 8, 1936, in Detroit, the son of Louis R. and Jennie Reed LaCava.
He was raised in Cleveland, and later enlisted in the Navy. During his military career he proudly served during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars before retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer W-4. After his retirement, he settled in Austintown. He then worked as a maintenance supervisor for the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services for 10 years. Lou was a member of the American Legion Post No. 301 and had volunteered at nine nursing homes, visiting fellow veterans and sending cards for special occasions. He and his wife were recently honored with a Legacy Award for their exemplary service to veterans.
Mr. LaCava also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, the outdoors and making wine. He had been recognized with numerous awards for his wine. He was a loving, caring, giving, and protective husband, father and friend.
He is survived by his wife, the former Marie A. Fortunato, whom he married Oct. 2, 1965; a daughter, Victoria Jean Robert LaFond of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, Christopher L. LaCava of Pikerington and Daniel D. LaCava of Austintown; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn LaCava and Hannah LaFond; a sister, Beverly Day of Sun City, Ariz.; a half sister, Winnie Jim Mistretta of Phoenix; his mother-in-law, Victoria Fortunato of Youngstown; sisters and brothers-in-law, Vickie Richard Pesce of Austintown and Debbie Mike Sulenski of Canfield; nieces and nephews, Mandy Magmore, Richard Sherri Pesce, Tony Pesce, Missy Sean Nelson, Molly Matt Menzie and Emily Sulenski; his great-nieces and nephews, Timmy Bowman, Katie Magmore and Addy Nelson; and his longtime companion, his dog, Bandit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis LaCava and Jennie LaCava Ashton; his stepfather, Gordon Ashton; and his father-in-law, Fred Fortunato.
