YOUNGSTOWN - Prayers will be held Monday at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Matthias Church for Lucy Marie (Sugar) Velchek, 83, who passed away peacefully on March 19, surrounded by her loving family.
Lucy was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her. Lucy's family knows she is now at peace, in the arms of Jesus, reuniting with all who have gone before her.
Lucy was born on Sept. 2, 1930, in Youngstown, a daughter of late Thomas and Pia (Vecchione) Giura.
She graduated from South High School in 1949. After working at Sears for many years up until 1990, Lucy enjoyed every moment of her retirement. There was nothing more valuable or important in her life than spending time with her family that included cooking dinner every Sunday for them.
She belonged to many clubs that included the ABW Group Mill Creek Chapter, Sears retirees and stars. She loved music and dancing, as well as her bowling league with her many great friends.
Along with her many friends, Lucy leaves to cherish her memory, her loving daughter, Mary (Rick) Cunningham, with whom she made her home and took wonderful care of her; her devoted sons, Harry (Pam) Sugar, Tony (Carol) Sugar, Carmen (Vicki) Sugar and Andrew (Anne Marie) Velchek; her grandchildren, Christopher (Angie) Sugar, Melissa (Mike) DiCioccio, Michael (Amy) Sugar, Jamie (Nate) Milstead, Nicholas Sugar, Patrick (Scarlett) Sugar, Matthew Callahan (fiancé Lauren), Taylor Callahan, Miranda Velchek and Connor Velchek; great-granddaughter, Mia Lucia DiCioccio; her sisters, Sue (Jerry) Fleming, Vera Lucansky and Josephine Ciavarella; and many nieces and nephews.
Welcoming her to Heaven's gates are her husband, Andrew Velchek, who passed away in 2005; her sister, Mary; her brothers, Carmen and Mike; and her great-grandsons, Liam Kent Sugar and Oliver Kent Sugar.
Family and friends may call Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
