Margaret Cooney

POLAND - A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel and a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Church in Poland for Mrs. Margaret M. "Peg" Cooney, 96, who died Monday afternoon, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

She was born Sept. 22, 1914, in Youngstown, a daughter of Gerhard and Helen Reardon Hettler.

Mrs. Cooney was a graduate of The Rayen School and had attended Youngstown College of Business. She had worked at Truscon Steel, McKelvey's Department Store, the Mahoning County Mental Health Board as an Executive Secretary and later as a Director of Volunteers at the Mental Health Association.

She was a member of the church, Junior Seton Club, Leffingwell Country Club, which then became Diamond Country Club and was the last living member of the Gay-oh Girls Club. Mrs. Cooney went to Mass everyday and was an avid golfer, who played until she was 88 and she loved to play cards, especially Poker and Duplicate Bridge.

Her greatest love, was her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was married to James Myron Cooney on Oct. 16, 1937, and he died July 3, 1981.

Peg leaves two daughters, Mary Gay Terry Miller of Poland and Kathleen Don McCabe of Clinton; two sons, James Mary Ann Cooney of Boardman and Dr. Michael Teresa Cooney of Powell; nine grandchildren, Terry Hope Miller, Greg Kristy Miller, Shannon Mike Constantine, Michael Dana Cooney, Matthew Jen Cooney, Meghan Jason Cromley, Colleen Jeff Bisesi, John Jessica McCabe and Erin Ryan Falknor; five step-granddaughters, Cathy Jason Simons, Deborah Jason Tucker, Mary, Beth and Susan Mandi; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Gerhard and Michael Hettler.

The family would like to thank the nurses aids and staff of Shepherd of The Valley Assistant Living for their kindness and loving care of Peg.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
