Margaret Kusmirek

April 5, 1919 — January 1, 2015

CANFIELD - A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at St. Christine Church in Youngstown for Margaret R. (Getchey) Kusmirek, 95, who died on New Year's morning.

Margaret was born on April 5, 1919, in Punxsutawney, Pa., the youngest child of Frank and Rosie (Polyi) Ravis.

As a child, her family moved to Yatesboro, Pa., where her father worked in the coal mines and her mother ran a small dairy. She grew up helping her older brothers deliver milk to neighbors. She took pride in referring to herself as a coal miner's daughter.

Margaret graduated from Grove City College in 1941, and began a 45-year career as a grade school teacher in Pennsylvania and Ohio. She taught for over 30 years in Austintown at Lynn Kirk and Frank Ohl schools. Margaret loved teaching children, especially language arts.

In 1946, she moved to Youngstown, where she met her first husband, Frank J. Getchey. They were married in June of 1948. Frank died in July of 1963.

Her second husband, Chester Kusmirek, preceded her in death in December of 1994.

Margaret was a long-time parishioner of St. Christine Parish and was a devout Catholic, who shared her strong faith with her children and grandchildren. Margaret was a member of the Three Arts Club, Catholic Collegiate, Austintown Retired Teachers, and was a founding member of the Mignonette Garden Club. For many years, she hosted the Three Arts Club Christmas party at her home and loved decorating and planning this event.

The loves of her life were her grandchildren. Nothing gave her more pleasure than attending their many activities and celebrating their milestones. She also loved to travel with her daughters, especially to New York and Las Vegas, and made her most recent trip there this past January.

Besides her parents and husbands, Margaret was preceded in death by her brothers, William, Frank and John; and an infant sister, Ellen.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Karen (Bruce) Joseph of Columbiana and Susan (Bob) Watson of Howland; grandchildren Alison Joseph (William Small) of Chicago, Kara Joseph of Beavercreek, and triplets Krista, Kyle, and Kayla Watson; and great-grandsons Carter and Hunter Small.

Margaret's family would like to thank her caregivers, Jackie Phibbs, Teddi Mancini, and Patty Evans, who cared for her the last years of her life.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4, at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.

Margaret's family requests that monetary contributions be made to St. Christine Church in Youngstown.
