POLAND - Prayers will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Church for Maria Margareta Williams, 87, who passed away Saturday at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman.
Maria was born Sept. 18, 1921 in Oberursel Am/Taunus Germany.
Maria left Germany at the age of 16 on the last ship to leave to New York prior to World War II.
She married during the war to Ensign Philip Williams on Oct. 27, 1944.
Maria was a parishioner of the Holy Family Church for 37 years, serving as a volunteer in her early years in the school cafeteria. She belonged to the Knights of Columbus Women's Guild, Holy Family Senior Citizens and the Saxons Women Branch.
Her life was devoted to her family and church. She spent the past 12 years wintering in Florida with her son and his wife, Mary, and her husband's family.
She lived in Poland for 37 years moving from Fairfield, Conn. She traveled extensively throughout the United States and made numerous trips to Europe.
Maria leaves her husband; her son, Philip Mary Williams of Minnesota; her daughter, Loretta Helmut Maier of Germany; three grandchildren, Eleanor Kuhns, Edward Williams and Michelle Maier; four great-grandchildren, Joseph and Edward Kuhns and Philip and Lily Williams; and 11 nieces and nephews, four of whom reside in Germany.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.
The family will be receiving friends Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
She was always kind and gentle. She will be sorely missed. God has chosen well.
