LIBERTY - Prayers will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Church with Msgr. William Connell, for Marie "Nana" Josephine Tahos, 97, who passed away Sunday morning at Liberty Arms Nursing Home.
Marie was born Dec. 13, 1917, in Youngstown, the only child of Joseph and Marie (Evancho) Valentino.
Marie attended The Rayen School.
She married Steve Tahos, who passed away on Nov. 11, 1956.
Marie continued to run her husband's business until she sold it and began working at Strouss-Hirshberg in downtown Youngstown. After employment of more than 30 years there, she retired when the downtown store closed in 1982.
Nana was an outstanding cook, mastering Italian, Slovak, and Greek dishes to please her family and friends. Her "Cut Out" cookies were legendary with both. She always loved to entertain.
Besides cooking, Marie was an avid crocheter, card player, and line dancer, and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Marie is survived by her three children, Joseph (companion Krista Gates), Georgianna (Donald) D'Andrea, and Anita (Norman) Stothard; nine grandchildren, Christine, Patricia, Diane, Joanna, Daniel, Marla, Melanie, Danielle, and Patty; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her daughter-in-law, Diane Cononco Tahos.
Family and friends may call on Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Because of her deep love for children, material tributes can be made in Marie's memory to Akron Children's Hospital, Boardman Campus.
Marie's family would like to give a special thanks to all of the staff at Masternick Liberty Arms Health Center for all of their care.
