WARREN - Martha Adelma Smerik, 89, passed away of complications of pneumonia early Friday morning at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown with her two sons by her side.
An area resident for 65 years, Martha was born September 1, 1925, in Rome, Ohio, the daughter of Willison and Susie (Hawkins) Kellogg.
She was a 1943 graduate of Rome High School and attended Trumbull Memorial Hospital Nursing School. Martha worked as a school librarian at Morgandale Elementary School in Warren before retiring.
Martha loved to read. She also enjoyed antiquing, going to garage sales, and camping at Cook Forest State Park.
Martha enjoyed 60 years of marriage with her husband, Andrew, whom she married March 26, 1949. Andrew died August 2, 2009.
Martha is survived by two sons, Rick Smerik of Boardman and Randy (Peggy) Smerik of San Diego, California; and two grandsons, Brian and Tommy Smerik, both of San Diego.
She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter Lisa Smerik; a sister Susanna McCarthy; three brothers, Richard, Clarence and David Kellogg; and a daughter-in-law, Deborah Smerik.
According to Martha's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service, and cremation will take place.
The Smerik family would like to especially thank the nursing staff on the fourth floor of the St. Elizabeth Medical Center for their kindness, care and genuine compassion, which was above and beyond what was expected.
In lieu of flowers, material contribution may be made in Martha's memory to a charity of the donor's choice.
