CANFIELD - Prayers will begin Monday at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church, for Mary Hope Davanzo, 90, who passed away Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014, at Hospice House surrounded by family and friends.
Mary was born on Feb. 4, 1924, in Youngstown, to Pasqual and Mary Pallante Sorice.
Mary graduated from East High School in Youngstown, where she was active in GAA and earned her varsity letter "E." She worked in a variety of positions, and ended her working career as a office manager for Dr. Dennis Orr.
Her main love was for her family. She was an excellent seamstress, but her real passion and expertise was in cooking and baking. Her house never lacked for the aroma of simmering pasta sauce; fresh baked cookies, shaped perfectly; and homemade pizza. Her famous cookies, nuthorns, were the first to go at any event. She took pride in her children and delight and joy in watching her grandchildren and then great-grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Charles Church in Boardman and enjoyed attending Mass and being part of the congregation.
She is survived by her daughter, Lucille (Dr. Dennis) Orr of Canfield; son Dr. Michael (Judith) Davanzo of Medina; brother William Sorice of Girard; grandchildren Dr. Dennis Paul (Nicole) Orr II of Canfield, Tamara (TJ) Hammar of Boardman, and Dr. Douglas Shawn (Rebecca) Orr of Parma; great-grandchildren Noelle, Joel and Hope Hammar, Brooklynne, Brennley, Bristol Orr, and Isaac Orr.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael A. Davanzo, whom she married June 29, 1946, and who died March 13, 1994; her brother, Sam Sorice; and her sister, Antonitte Lanzino.
Family and friends may call Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
