AUSTINTOWN - Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, officiated by the Rev. John Ettinger, for Mrs. Mary Jane Engelhardt, 83, who died Thursday evening at her home.
Mrs. Engelhardt was born Oct. 12, 1932, in Youngstown, daughter of James and Dorothy Filbert, and was a lifelong resident of the area.
Jane was a homemaker, and she stayed home to raise her two sons while they were growing up. When they were close to adulthood, she attended Choffin Career Center to become a licensed practical nurse. She devoted many years at Southside Hospital to caring for patients, and a good portion of those years were in the Department of Medicine.
She retired to take care of her husband, Dick, when he was sick with cancer in 1994 before he passed away. Up until that time, they enjoyed snow skiing, RV travel, golfing, fishing, and spending time enjoying their family and neighbors.
Being a grandmother and a great-grandmother was a great source of pride for Jane. Jane loved attending church in the morning at Immaculate Heart of Mary, where she met her beloved companion since 1996, Robert Rider, and they continued to spend many years enjoying time at Bob's cottage, golfing, ice fishing and traveling to Canada and Florida to visit friends. She also adored Bob's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and added them to the list of many extended family members whom she loved. She loved collecting Bob's paintings and displaying them in her home. She collected hummingbirds and birds, and loved gardening, and wearing colorful decorative broches and pins.
Jane leaves behind to cherish all their wonderful memories her beloved companion, Robert Rider; two sisters, Edna (Del Eitmiller), and sister Gertrude Martin; her son, Tom and wife Joan; son Rick and wife Ginny; grandchildren Kirstin, Erin, Jorunn, Ryan and Ricky and their spouses; and great-grandchildren, Lucia, Sebastian, Inez, Andrea, Ricky, Coulton and Owen; and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday from 10 to 10:50 a.m. at the funeral home.
Mary Jane will be laid to rest next to her husband at Resurrection Cemetery following the service.
