COLUMBUS - Prayers will begin Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church, officiated by Monsignor William J. Connell, for Mary E. Morrison, 101, who died peacefully Tuesday afternoon at New Albany Garden and Care Center Assisted Living.
Mary, also known as Gi Gi or Grandma Murray was born Sept. 4, 1917, in Youngstown, Ohio, to John and Ida (Mathias) Funcheon, and was a lifelong resident until she moved to Mayfield Heights with her daughter, Diane in 2011, then to New Albany Care Center, New Albany, Ohio in 2013.
Mary grew up on the Northside where she attended St. Edward's grade school and Rayen High School. After graduating from Rayen High School and Peter's Comtompeter School, Mary worked for McKelvey Co., U.S. Steel and was secretary to the County Auditor until she left to raise her family. When her family was raised, she went back to work at Strouss-Hirshberg until it closed.
She was a charter member of Holy Family Church in Poland, President of the Poland Federated Democrats Club, member of the Caprice Club and Homemakers Club. Mary also worked as a Poll worker and was Presiding Judge for many years.
Mary leaves her two daughters, Colleen Manchester of Newport Beach, CA and Diane (Bob) Lilko of Mayfield Heights, OH; son John Paul (Mona) Morrison of Ghanna, OH; sister Judith (Bill) Joyce of Swampscott, MA; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John P. Morrison; two sisters, Ann O'Hara and Helen Trumble; and her brother John Funcheon.
Family and friends may call Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested material tributes take the form of donations to Holy Family School, 2731 Center Rd. Poland, OH 44514.
