Mary Richnafsky

December 4, 1926 — August 25, 2016

AUSTINTOWN - Mary C. Richnafsky left this earthly life to be with God on Aug. 25, 2016.

Mary was born on Dec. 4, 1926, in Whitney, Pa., and came to Youngstown when she was seven years old. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Franko Schlosser.

She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1944. She went on to study nursing at St. Elizabeth Hospital and graduated from their School of Nursing in 1947. She worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital and for several area physicians. She ended her career, which spanned almost 40 years, working for the Youngstown Visiting Nurse's Association. She retired in 1985. Mary loved being a nurse and took great pride in caring for her patients.

She had a strong faith in God and was an active member of St. Joseph's Church in Austintown. She was a 25 year member of their garden club and did many things to support the church and its members. She spent many hours on the phone organizing the church's prayer chain and the St. Vincent DePaul soup kitchen volunteer workers, making sure that the needs of others were being taken care of.

She loved to sew and bake, and often used these talents for the church and for her family. She was a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association Branch 161 and was a volunteer at the St. Vincent DePaul soup kitchen in Youngstown and at St. Paul's pirohy program in New Middletown. She was also a member of the Youngstown Council of Catholic Nurses, St. Elizabeth Hospital Alumnae and St. Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary.

Her husband, Edward J. Richnafsky, whom she married Sept. 10, 1966, passed away on Nov. 30, 1999.

She is survived by two stepdaughters, Mary Ann Bahmer of Cuyahoga Falls and Monica Deskin of North Jackson; along with eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by three sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Zajac of North Lima, Anne (John) Tokarsky of Boardman and Ceil Schlosser of Boardman; and one brother, John (Barb) Schlosser of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Martin Schlosser; her sister, Margaret Mady; and four nephews, Michael and Thomas Mady, Eugene Zajac and Douglas Schlosser.

There will be one hour of visitation at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Monday.

Prayers will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on New Road in Austintown.

Donations can be made to Catholic Charities, St. Vincent DePaul soup kitchen, or The Rescue Mission of Youngstown.
