YOUNGSTOWN - Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church for Mary Lou Schmidt, 82, who died Sunday morning at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center.
Mary Lou was born Aug. 25, 1932, the daughter of Louis and Anna (Duesing) Gries.
She was a 1950 graduate of The Rayen School and started her career at Youngstown Sheet and Tube. Mary Lou later worked for Briel's Flowers and Austintown Fitch, where she worked as a cafeteria worker for 23 years until her retirement in 1999.
Mary Lou was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir and the Ladies Aid Society.
Mary's husband Paul L. Schmidt, whom she married Sept. 22, 1952 died March 24, 2014.
She is survived by two daughters, Terri Ann (Bill) Gifford of Lake Milton, and Robin Marie Guzzo of Austintown; a son Paul L. Jr. (Carol) Schmidt of Canfield; brother Bill Gries of New Middletown; four grandchildren, Katie Guzzo, Paul III. "Louie" (Melissa) Schmidt, Matthew (Tina) Schmidt and Aaron Guzzo; two great grandchildren, Bella and Dominic Schmidt; a sister-in-law Ruth Laurde; and several nieces and nephews, who referred to her as Aunt Moo.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, LaVerne Johnson and Virginia Jankovich; and a brother Roy "Bud" Gries.
Family and friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 pm at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel and Tuesday from 10 to 10:45 AM at the church.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to Immanuel Lutheran 458 Redondo Rd. Youngstown, OH 44504.
