YOUNGSTOWN - Prayers will begin Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Brendan Church for Mary M. "Mickey" Smotrilla, 91, who died Wednesday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown surrounded by her family.
Mickey was born Dec. 11, 1925, in Youngstown, the daughter of John P. and Theresa (Mangan) Murtha.
She was a 1944 graduate of Ursuline High School and worked in the payroll department at US Steel.
Mickey was a lifelong member of St. Brendan Church, a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and bowling league. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years and was active in coordinating Ursuline's class reunion.
Mickey was always very proud of her Irish heritage and her Catholic faith.
Her husband, Edward L. Smotrilla, whom she married May 19, 1949, died Dec. 7, 2002.
Mickey is survived by her daughter, Mary Jude (Martin) Kane of Youngstown; son Kevin (JoAnne) Smotrilla of Austintown; daughter-in-law Sandie Smotrilla of Youngstown; sister Rosaleen Murtha of Youngstown; five grandchildren, Sean Smotrilla (fiancée Annie Morris), Edward (Kimberly) Smotrilla, James Kane, Joseph (Danielle) Kane and Neysa (Andrew) Caamano; and three great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sons, Martin, Brendan, and Michael Smotrilla; brother John Murtha; and sister Patricia Shea.
Family and friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
