MATTHEW 'MATT' FRANCIS POPOVICH

CANFIELD - Matthew Francis Popovich, 20, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, from a heart ailment he had since birth, while exercising at his home on March 5, 2015.

He was born Jan. 19, 1995, in Youngstown.

Matt was a 2014 graduate of Canfield High School and a first-year student at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, where he was pursuing a career in nursing. Also, he was a member of the University's Alpha Phi Omega and was honored when he received the Sunshine Award for his outstanding community service.

There is no doubt Matt had a heart of gold. He was always willing to give his time to help others. He was a dedicated blood donor for the American Red Cross and often volunteered at other charities including the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society and the YMCA.

He was a member of St. Michael's Parish in Canfield, where he was a regular altar server. He recently was elated to be chosen godfather for his cousin, Adriana Clark.

He was an avid sports fan and a devoted Cleveland Indians fan. His love for the Tribe was obvious. He often gave a detailed description of every Cleveland Indians player, including statistics and background information, that amazed everyone.

In addition, he played 10 years of organized baseball and four years of scholastic golf at Canfield High School.

He is survived by his parents, Joseph and Gina (Stabilito) of Canfield; and a brother, Nicholas, and future sister-in-law, Taylor Halko of Phoenix. He is also survived by his grandfathers, Alfred R. Stabilito of Boardman and Hank Popovich of New Middletown; an uncle, Alfred F. Stabilito of Boardman; aunts Betty Ann Kadvan of Poland, Deborah (Terrence) Van Such of Louisville, Doreen (Rob) Chance of Poland, and Laurie (Ken) Goist of New Middletown.

Also, he leaves first cousins, Michael Kadvan, Lisa (Alan) Clark, Jillian VanSuch, Teri (Jon) Gorski, Robert (Corey) Chance, Melissa (Jim) Anderson, and Jason, Ryan (Mary Beth) and Brandon Goist.

He was preceded in death by an uncle, Andy Kadvan; and his grandmothers, Ann Popovich and Marie Stabilito.
