AUSTINTOWN - Funeral services will be held Friday at noon at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, for Melanie M. Mayesky, 54, who died Monday evening at home, surrounded by her family.
Melanie was born Dec. 31, 1960, in Youngstown, the daughter of John R. and Nona J. (Kreder) Mayesky.
She was a 1978 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science in 1985, from Youngstown State University, where she was in the ROTC program. Melanie was a veteran of the Army National Guard from 1977 until 1994. She served her country as a commander in the 838 MP during Desert Storm.
Melanie worked as a police officer for the Austintown Police Department from 1988 until 1998, where she was the first female police officer hired in the township.
She was a member of FOE of Austintown, the American Legion 301 and the VFW of Austintown. Melanie enjoyed bowling and spending time with her family, especially her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Melanie will always be remembered for her kind spirit and her love for helping others.
Melanie is survived by her sister, Cheryl A. (Joseph) Banjak of Liberty; two brothers, Scott (Judie) Mayesky of Austintown and LeNard (Janeane) Mayesky of Columbus; a nephew, Christopher Lund; nieces Deanna Banjak, Amanda Puskar and Patrice Rider; and great-nieces and great-nephews Gabriella Rider, Xzavier Wiseman, Kylie Banjak, Arianna Perry, Avery Banjak, Ella Morris, Ethan Morris and Kaleigh Puskar.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Gary Mayesky.
Family and friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Second Harvest Food Bank, 2805 Salt Springs Road, Youngstown, OH 44509, or the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King Blvd., Youngstown, OH 44501.
The family would like to thank Leslie Larue and Leann Wade for the care and compassion given to Melanie.
