Michael Collins

YOUNGSTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Christine Church at 11:00am on Friday, April 24, 2015 for Michael Lloyd Collins. He passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences following a four-year courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma. He was 54.

Michael was born in Youngstown, Ohio on May 12, 1960. He was the oldest son of the late Raymond and Virginia (Biggins) Collins. He retired from the Mahoning County Sanitary Engineering Department.

Mike leaves behind his loving wife, Colleen (Koontz) whom he married on August 1, 1987 and their two amazing children, Katy Collins who resides in Nashville, and Michael "Mickey" Collins at home.

He is survived by three sisters; Colleen (Tom) Boyle of Youngstown, Maureen Collins of Youngstown, Kathy (David) O'Neil of Poland, and four brothers; Raymond Collins of Youngstown, Tom (Debbie) Collins of Lowellville, Gary (Amber) Collins of Youngstown, and Doug Collins of Youngstown.

Michael graduated from Ursuline High School in 1978. He was a four-year member of the Ursuline football team, was named to the All Steel Valley Conference Team for two years and earned All-Northeast Ohio honors. Mike went on to play football at the University of Southern Illinois, and then Semi Professional football for the Canton Bulldogs. He was inducted into the Ursuline High School Hall of Fame in 2014 for his accomplishments in football. Michael had a passion for coaching and had the opportunity to coach many children throughout the years. He coached football and basketball at St. Christine School on the city's Westside, spent several years coaching high school football as an assistant coach at Ursuline High School, and most recently as the head coach for the Ursuline High School boys golf team.

Mike was a member of St. Christine Parish his entire life. He shared his faith by being a part of the men's renewals for the past 10 years as a liturgist and as a CCD teacher. He also volunteered his time working at the St. Christine festival every year and was a member of the Men's Golf League.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2015, from 3-8pm at St. Christine Church, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown.

The family would like to thank the many wonderful doctors, nurses, family and friends who have taken care of Michael here in Youngstown and in Little Rock, AR.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations can be made to the Michael Collins Memorial Fund c/o Farmer's National Bank Cornersburg.
