AUSTINTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Christine Church, celebrated by the Rev. John Keehner for Michael T. Griffin, 67, who died Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Hospice House after a six and a half year struggle with colon cancer.
Michael was born May 21, 1948, in Youngstown, the youngest of six children of James P. and Agnes (Reagan) Griffin.
He graduated from Ursuline High School in 1966 and Youngstown State University in 1971, where he received his Bachelor's Degree. In 1980, Michael received an Associate of Applied Business in Computer Technology from Kent State University and was employed by Mahoning County in the Data Processing and Title Departments.
After retirement, he was an active volunteer for many community organizations. Michael was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society office, special events and was coordinator of the Canfield Fair booth. He was also active in Austintown Relay for Life as a committee member, speaker and participant. Michael was named Volunteer of the Year for Outstanding Service by the local American Cancer Society in 2010. He was a board member and president of the Mahoning County Public Employee Retirement Inc. (PERI) Chapter 18. He was also a reading tutor for Austintown Elementary students and involved in the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Michael leaves his wife of 38 years, Patricia Panowich Griffin; his daughter, Erin Kay (Ryan) Russell of Granville; sisters Dwyn (Richard) Peake of Canfield, Patricia Haitz of Tampa, Fla., and Mary Eileen (C. Michael) McAtee of Austintown; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marcia (Ruben) Duran of Gilbert, Ariz.
Besides his parents, Michael was preceded in death by sister Kathleen Griffin; brother and sister-in-law John and Frances Griffin; brother-in-law Martin Haitz Sr.; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Steve and Antoinette Panowich.
Family and friends may visit Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel.
Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, a donation in Michael's name be made to Austintown Relay for Life/American Cancer Society, 525 N. Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406.
