Michael Johnston

AUSTINTOWN ? A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and prayers offered at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Michael C. Johnston Sr., 68, who died early Sunday morning at his home after a courageous three month battle with cancer.


Michael was born Jan. 13, 1941 in Diamondville, Pa., the son of the late Ray and Betty Kelly Johnston.


After graduating from Purchase Line High School, he served in the Air Force as an MP.


He served his apprenticeship in Detroit and had worked for General Motors for over 32 years, before retiring from GM Lordstown as a tool maker in 2000.


He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, UAW Local No. 1112, the Meander Aerie of the Eagles in Austintown, the Eat?n Park breakfast club, and was an avid golfer, golfing in the GM Scramble League.


He is survived by his wife and best friend of 16 years, the former Sharon Klawuhn, whom he married Dec. 22, 2005; two daughters, Justine Michael Galant of Reynoldsburg and Jyll Andrew Cooper of Salem, Ore.; sons, Michael C. Marie Johnston Jr. of Spring, Texas, Zak Arin Steiner of Canton and Wes Steiner of Austintown; grandchildren, Justin and Marissa, Grace and Eva, Mikey and one on the way; sisters, Babs Dan Demand of Springfield, Va., Jackie Jim Kines of Anniston, Ala. and Helen McGurk of Mechanicsville, Md.; a brother, Ray Michelle Johnson of Chevy Chase, Md.; and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Strawn of Austintown.


Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Dennis McGurk.


Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.


The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Emmanuel Community Care Center, 2 N. State St., Girard, OH 44420.
