AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will be held Friday at 12:15 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, followed by a funeral Mass at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church on S. Belle Vista Avenue for Michael G. Maskarinec, 87, who passed away Tuesday evening at Heritage Manor, where he resided for over the past two years.
Michael was born on Aug. 15, 1925, in Youngstown, a son of the late George and Mary Garich Maskarinec.
He was a World War II veteran and served in the 80th Division, 317 Regimen of the U.S. Army. He received the Purple Heart and served as a prisoner of war.
Michael worked at U.S. Steel as a carpenter for over 35 years. He was active in St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church as a member of the Holy Name Society, money counter, and carpenter during the construction of St. Mary's Assumption Center. Michael's hobbies included gardening, fishing, electronics, golf, reading, puzzles, and playing cards.
Michael leaves his wife, the former Irene DiNunzio, whom he married on Sept. 12, 1953. Shortly afterward they moved to Austintown, where he built the house they lived in for over 45 years.
He also leaves his four sons, Michael Suzy Maskarinec and their children, Kate, Ethan, and Grace of Pittsburgh, Greg Maureen Maskarinec and their children, Daniel and Matthew of King of Prussia, Pa., Bruce Shelby Maskarinec and their children, Jennifer and Sarah of Washington, Pa., and Kenneth Sandra Maskarinec and their children, Karynn, Colleen and Clayton of North Jackson; and his sister, Mary Coccetella of Derby, Kan.
Michael was also preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Hrifko; two grandsons, Johnny and Jason Hrifko; a sister, Ann Truhan; and a brother, John Maskarinec.
Family and friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the chapel at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church or Heritage Manor, where he received exceptionally competent and loving care from their outstanding staff.
