AUSTINTOWN - Michael Saborse, 87, died Sunday, June 17, 2012, in Briarfield at the Ridge Nursing Home, from complications following kidney failure.
Born Aug. 30, 1924, in Youngstown, he was the son of the late Carmen and Jennie Pirone Saborse.
A graduate of The Rayen School, Michael earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Miami University in Ohio, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.
"Mike" was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He served our country in the infantry during World War II in Iwo Jima and also during the Korean War. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the military, Mike began work in the grocery industry. He worked for Kroger Food Stores as a store manager at various locations and retired after 38 years with the company.
Michael was an active member of St. Joseph's Church in Austintown and also attended St. Christine's in Youngstown. He was part of the church Men's Club, RCIA, Parish Council and was a Sacristan. He belonged to the Serra Club for the promotion of religious vocations and the Knights of Columbus.
Mike was also a member of the VFW and served as past adjutant, the FOP auxiliary secretary and treasurer and was one of the former directors for the Youngstown Bowling Association. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and especially looked forward to and enjoyed attending annual Marine Corps reunions.
Mike was preceded in death in 1992 by his wife, Diane Mayer Saborse, whom he married April 20, 1954, and with whom he shared 38 years of marriage.
He will be dearly missed by his loving daughters, Pamela Jerry Trodden of Anchorage, Alaska and Shellie Leo O'Malley of Austintown; four grandchildren, Halley, Margaret fiance' Anthony Trodden and Leo and Michael O'Malley; and a sister, Victoria Louis "Ribby" Putigano of Austintown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jean Petrella and Marge Forde; and by a brother, Pete Saborse.
Family and friends may visit Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel.
Prayers will begin Thursday morning, June 21, 2012, at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home before Mass at St. Christine's Church at 10 a.m.
According to Michael's wishes, he will be cremated following the funeral Mass and entombment will be within the mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery.
