ASHLAND - Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 388 E. Midlothian Blvd., for Mrs. Miriam Whetstone, 85, who died Tuesday morning at Lutheran Village Assisted Living.
Miriam was born May 8, 1929, in Middletown, the daughter of the late Rev. C.B.A. and Helen (Saur) Stacy.
She was a 1947 graduate of Lucas High School and studied pre-med at Wittenberg University for a year. Miriam graduated from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in 1951.
She worked as a Registered Nurse at ValleyCare North Side Medical Center and Woodside Receiving Hospital. Miriam also worked as a private duty nurse in the Youngstown area for 25 years.
Miriam was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent for many years, sang in the church choir, and was a member of the Women's Evangelical Lutheran Church of America Organization (WELCA). Miriam also organized the Happy Days Senior Group for the church.
She was also a member of the Ohio Nurses Association District No. 3 and was a Red Cross volunteer for several years.
One of Miriam's proudest accomplishments was helping establish The Midlothian Free Health Clinic in 2008. She was passionate about caring for those in need. The clinic continues to prosper today and is providing service to over 1,000 patients. Miriam was recognized by the governor of the State of Ohio for her work in the community and her tireless efforts in caring for the needy.
Her husband, Raymond Alvin Whetstone, whom she married June 30, 1952, died Feb. 29, 2004.
Miriam is survived by her daughter, Linda (John) Robinson, of Ashland; her son, Timothy (Mary Lynn) Whetstone of Columbus; a sister, Lois Garlough of Moneta, Va.; two brothers, Rev. John Stacy of Chawfordsville, Ind., and Rev. David Stacy of Ft. Myers, Fla.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends may call on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, and Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
