Neil Lowry

January 3, 1932 — April 24, 2016

CANFIELD - Private family services will be held on Thursday morning, for Mr. Neil T. Lowry, 84, who died early Sunday morning at Briarfield at Ashley Circle.

Mr. Lowry was born on Jan 3, 1932, in Youngstown, son of Clarence and Grace E. (Mullin) Lowry, and was a lifelong resident of Youngstown.

He graduated from Ursuline High School in 1950, where he was all-city in football. He later taught World History and American History at Ursuline for one year. He received a scholarship to play football at the University of Kentucky, where he was named as a captain, and was All-American under Bear Bryant and Blanton Collier. One of his most memorable moments was playing in the Blue/Grey All-Star game his senior year.

Following graduation from Kentucky, he selflessly enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he earned the rank of first lieutenant. Neil worked for Youngstown State University as an English teacher, then G.M.A.C. for 10 years. He later worked for A.P. O'Hora, where he worked in sales, doing bids for big jobs. Neil's final occupation was that of a franchise owner for Neil T. Lowry Co. as an Armco metal buildings dealer.

He was a longtime member of St. Michael's in Canfield, and most recently of St. Christine. Neil also enjoyed speaking at AA meetings, most times this was the highlight of his day. He also sponsored several people through AA. He was the master of ceremonies for over 30 years for the Bear Bryant Reunion, and also for the Ursuline Nick Johnson Fundraiser dinner. He was named into the Ursuline High School Hall of Fame, and the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame. He enjoyed playing guitar, singing and karaoke.

Neil's wife, the former Elaine Rochow, whom he married on Oct. 3, 1959, died May 1, 1993.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Kelly M. Beaver, of Nashville, Tenn.; two sons, Neil D. (Mary Jo) Lowry of Friendswood, Texas and Brian (Arlene) Lowry of Baltimore; brother Thomas (Mary Jane) Lowry of Boardman; companion Fawna Veach; seven grandchildren, Caroline, Cory, Christina, Amanda, Sarah, Shannon, and Brianna; and one great-grandson, Wyatt.

Besides his parents, Neil was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine.

Family and friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife.

The Lowry family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Inn at Christine Valley, Briarfield at Ashley Circle, and Hospice of The Valley for their compassionate care of their dad.
