Niklaus Negovan

STRUTHERS - Prayers will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Christ Our Savior, St. Nicholas Church for Niklaus Negovan, 89, who passed away Thursday morning at Masternick Memorial.

Niklaus was born Nov. 9, 1926, in Startschewo, Banat, Yugoslavia, the son of Mathias and Theresia (Metterneck) Negovan.

He married his wife, Theresia (Pittmann) Negovan on April 5, 1950. In December of 1950, Niklaus immigrated to the United States with his wife and became a member of St. Nicholas Church and a resident of Struthers for the remainder of his life.

Niklaus retired in 1977, after 29 years of service in the steel industry, working for The Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. He was a member of the Youngstown German-Hungarian Maennerchor and the Apollo Maennerchor of Sharon, Pa. He enjoyed singing very much in the Maennerchor Choir and received an honorary 50-year pin. Niklaus had a passion for carpentry and bricklaying, in which he helped build homes with family and friends. Some of his other joys were gardening, woodworking, and home repairs.

Niklaus leaves his two daughters, Mary (William) Bartell of Poland and Kathi Ferrett of New Middletown; three grandchildren, Robert (Jaime) Ortenzio of North Miami, Fla., Christopher (Erin) Bartell of Pittsburgh, and Brian (Jessica) Bartell of Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Katharina (Negovan) Pittmann of Poland; and three nephews, Frank (Donna) Pittmann of Perrysburgh, Paul (Cynthia) Pittmann of Columbus, Mathias (Linda) Pittmann of Struthers.

In addition to his parents, Niklaus was preceded in death by his brother, Stephan; his mother-in-law, Maria Pittmann; and his brother-in-law, John Pittmann.

Family and friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at St. John's the Baptist Cemetery.
