BOARDMAN - Services will be Tuesday at 2:00 PM at the Zion Lutheran Church for Norma J. Smith age 87 who passed away Thursday evening at her home.
Norma was born August 26, 1919 in Youngstown, the daughter of A. Case and Elizabeth Wooley Shields, and granddaughter of James A. Shields former Mahoning County Sheriff, whose family Shields Road was named after.
A lifelong area resident Norma had worked at Mass. Mutual Insurance and at the Fullerton Transfer Company. She was a longtime member of the Zion Lutheran Church where she was active in all facets of the church. She was also a volunteer for meals on wheels, a member and past officer of the Athenaeum Club and the Federation of Women's Clubs, and a former member of the Western Reserve Republican Women. Norma enjoyed baking and cooking and was well known for her lemon pie she would share with the other kitchen volunteers at her church, and for the delicious soup and custard she would deliver if you were sick.
Her husband George J. Smith whom she married July 28, 1951 died February 13, 1989. She is survived by a sister in law Marguerite Shields of Poland, nieces, Marilyn Thomas Chako of Struthers, and Nancy Shields Ellis of St. Petersburg, Fla, and nephews, Samuel Jane Paulo of Wadsworth, and John Pat Shields of Cleveland.
Besides her husband she was also preceded in death by a sister Nellie L. Rice, three brothers, Russell, John, and Howard Shields, and a nephew Robert Paulo.
Friends may call from 4 PM to 7 PM Monday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, and Tuesday at the Zion Lutheran Church from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in Norma's memory.
