CANFIELD - Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, for Norman Todd "Tadpole" Viets, 83, who died peacefully Thursday evening at home surrounded by his family.
Norman was born April 20, 1935, in Garrettsville, the son of Joseph M. and Hazel (Lower) Viets.
He worked as a truck driver for various companies until he retired in 2008.
Norman was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country from 1953 to 1956 as a tank commander with the rank of Sergeant.
He enjoyed watching football, NASCAR, attending antique car shows, gardening, canning pickles and hot peppers, and reading, especially military history. Most of all, Norman enjoyed the time he spent with his family.
Norman is survived by his wife, the former Beverly P. Brakeman, whom he married Jan. 16, 1954; his daughter, Sharon Viets of Austintown; two sons, William Joseph (Joice) Viets of Delaware, Ohio and Michael Norman Viets of Austintown; sister Joanne Viets; nine grandchildren, Ricky, Billy, Tara, Jenna, Craig, Carissa, Jamie Rose, Morgan and Courtney; nine great-grandchildren, Caleb, Chase, Aubrie, Cambria, Braden, Tommy, Andrew, Ricky, and Matthew; and his canine companion, Dolly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons Richard Todd and Darrell Craig Viets; daughter Robin Paige Viets (Stock); sisters Mildred Rand, Verabelle Davis, Marilyn Kiser, and Bonita Mallory; and brothers Wayne, Robert, Richard, Lyle, and James Viets.
Family and friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
