BOARDMAN: Patrick Leo Murphy, 93, died Saturday, June 21, at home surrounded by his family and friends.
Patrick was born September 11, 1920, in Youngstown, to Patrick and Mary Grace Murphy and was a 1939 graduate of South High School. Patrick served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a sergeant for the 415th Nightfighter Squadron. Following the war he embarked on a series of careers until 1956 when he began working in sales for the Rhiel Supply Company where he "never had customers, only friends." Officially retiring after 56 years, he continued on as Rhiel's Goodwill Ambassador.
He married the love of his life, the former Sara Jane Fye, with whom he had four children. Although "Murph" and Sara traveled the world, his most precious time was spent with his family and a multitude of friends. One of Murph's great passions was golfing, often to be seen on the links of Mill Creek Park. He took pride in achieving his pilot's licence, fulfilling a dream inspired by his war service. Always active in community events and organizations, Patrick was a member of the Poland Rotary and received the Paul Harris Fellow Award.
Patrick is survived by two daughters, Patt (Greg) Kane of St. Charles, IL, and Barb (Frank) Coster of Niagara on the Lake, ON; a son, John "Mike" Murphy of Houston, TX; son-in-law, Jim (Terri) Omdahl of Bethlehem, PA; a sister Eila Jean Rodgers of Austintown; eight grandchildren, Jeremy (Andrea) Murphy, Mark (Lindsey) Kane, Tim (Colleen) Kane, Erin Kane, Rachel Omdahl, Patrick, Heather and Emily Coster; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Annaliese Murphy; and his dear friend Maxine Wakeford.
