CANFIELD - Prayers will begin Friday morning at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church, for Mr. Paul A Bindas Sr., 72, who entered eternal life with Jesus Christ on Tuesday morning at the Hospice House after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Paul was born June 15, 1940, in Youngstown, a son of Paul E. and Ann M. Casciano Bindas.
Paul was a 1958 graduate of Canfield High School, where he played football, baseball and ran track. He was named All Inter-County League in football in 1956 and 1957. In addition, he earned All Ohio honors in 1957 and was named Canfield High School's MVP in 1957. After graduation he entered Heidelberg College, where he played varsity football for three years being named co-Captain as a Junior and Captain his Senior year. He also played varsity baseball for three years and was named co-Captain his Senior year.
After his graduation, Paul taught school at Berlin Western Reserve High School, where he was an assistant football coach, head basketball coach and track coach. Mr. Bindas was also involved with the Millcreek Junior Baseball Association for almost 10 years, winning numerous titles. In 1991, Mr. Bindas was inducted into the Canfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
In 1966 he went into the grocery business with his father. He was a partner in several Sparkle Markets, including the Wedgewood Sparkle, was the owner operator of Bindas Sparkle Market in Austintown and the Canfield Sparkle Market. He was very active in the grocery profession, serving on the board and in numerous positions of the Youngstown Area Grocers Association, the Ohio State Grocers Association and on the Sparkle Market Board of Directors.
He was an avid golfer and sports fan. He had been a member of Tippecanoe Country Club for over 10 years and a member of Avalon Lakes Golf Club for the past eight years. Paul especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and their other activities.
He will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great friend and for his love for life.
His wife of 42 years, the former Mary Beth Pompoco, whom he married June 27, 1964, died October 13, 2006.
He is survived by Kris Ted Melewski of Boardman and Kellie Bindas, with whom he made his home; three sons, Paul Sandy Bindas Jr. of Canfield, Patrick of Boardman and Tom Michelle Bindas of Poland; and eight grandchildren, Taylor, Morgan, Gianna, Ashley, Jacob and Paul Bindas and Michael and Marisa Melewski.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of contributions to the Mary Beth Bindas Scholarship Fund in Paul's memory.
