Paul Haustovich

YOUNGSTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Paul F. Haustovich, 90, who passed away Monday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.


Paul was born June 6, 1919 in Youngstown, the son of Frank and Anna Haustovich, and lived here his whole life.


Paul was a 1937 graduate of East High School, where he was a member of the National Honors Society and the East High Orchestra. He was the salutatorian of his class and a member of the Electron Club and was a Chemistry Lab Assistant. He was also the winner of the Bausch & Lomb Science Award and was the recipient of the American Legion Citizenship Award.


Paul was employed for 40 years by Aeroquip Republic Rubber Corporation in research and development and product management, and then for 10 years by Sebring based Salem Republic Rubber Co., where he was vice president and technical director. Upon retirement in 1987, he was made vice president emeritus.


Paul attended Youngstown College, now Youngstown State University, where he was a chemistry major. He was well known in the field of industrial rubber products through being a patent holder and by having contributed various articles to nationally distributed journals. An engineering technical manual, which he authored, also found wide spread industrial application and was used as a text book at the University of Idaho College of Mines, the University of Nevada Mackay School of Mines and the Michigan Technological University.


As a result of his varied activities and contributions, he was interviewed by Marquis "Who's Who In Finance and Industry."


He was a volunteer for Youngstown Radio Reading Service, where he read for the blind. He was a member of the Akron Rubber Group and the Mahoning Valley Management Association. He was a charter member of the St. Christine Church and a member of St. Teresa Center.


At one time, Paul was a member of the Central YMCA's Physical Committee and the Tournament Volleyball Team. Paul enjoyed fishing, yard work, reading, and was a collector of scale model, classic and antique cars and motorcycles. He also was an umpire for the Mill Creek Little League for a number of years.


Besides his wife, the former Elizabeth Kirkner, whom he married May 10, 1952, he leaves a son, Dr. Frank M. Haustovich of Mars, Pa.; a daughter, Susan Robert E. Lee of Jefferson; a daughter-in-law, Deborah Haustovich of Youngstown; two granddaughters, Kristie and Kara Haustovich; and a nephew, Rodger Burnich of Monroe, Conn.


Paul was preceded in death by his er parents; a son, Mark Haustovich; and a sister, Mabel Burnich.


The family will be receiving friends Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Christine Church.


The family requests that material tributes take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society.


Professional arrangements are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
