YOUNGSTOWN - A funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 485 Redondo Road in Youngstown for Mr. Paul L. Schmidt Sr., 82, who died Monday morning at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.
Paul was born Oct. 7, 1931, in Youngstown, a son of Walter and Cleo Berlin.
He was a 1950 graduate of The Rayen School and served in the Army as a Medic during the Korean conflict. He had worked at Briel Flowers, Youngstown Sheet and Tube as an Inside Sales Representative for 27 years and than want to work for Bakers Plastics as a custom fabricator retiring last year. Paul was a lifelong member of the church, served as President of the Congregation, Sunday School Superintendent and was the choir director for 25 years.
He loved his family, especially when he got to go camping with them. Carpentry was his hobby building many things for his family. He was an avid gardener, especially enjoyed growing violets and vegetables.
Paul leaves his wife of 61 years, the former MaryLou Gries; one son, Paul (Carol) Schmidt Jr. of Canfield; two daughters, Terri (Bill) Gifford of Lake Milton and Robin Guzzo of Austintown; one sister, Ruth Luarde of McDonald; and four grandchildren, Katie Guzzo, Paul "Louie" Schmidt III and his fiancée Melissa, Matthew (Tina) Schmidt and Aaron Guzzo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the service at the church.
