YOUNGSTOWN a�" A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Phyllis M. Battafarano, 87, who passed away late Tuesday afternoon.
Phyllis was born Aug. 11, 1927, in Youngstown, a dedicated daughter to the late Phillip and Antoinette Battafarano.
She graduated in 1946 from The Rayen High. After enrolling at Youngstown State University to study education, she withdrew to help care for her mother.
Early in her career, from 1960 to 1978, she was a secretary at Aeroquip Corp Republic Rubber Division. Phyllis went on to join the U.S. Postal Service, where she worked as a letter processor for over 20 years, retiring in 2000.
Phyllis was a charter member of the Youngstown Charter Chapter of American Business Women, also serving as their president and Woman of the Year.
She was an active member of St. Anthony Church, serving as a first Eucharistic minister. An original committee member of the parish, she served as the recording and financial secretary to St. Anthony Comity.
Phyllis was a Briar Hill Debutant, a social group of women whose friendship blossomed since high school. They enjoyed many social gatherings, vacations, and were active in their community.
As a breast cancer survivor since the late 80s, Phyllis had an outstanding appreciation for life and lived to enjoy every minute. Along with her fiancé of 23 years and the only love of her life, Dan Patta, she enjoyed vacationing, dining out, shopping, golfing, and much more. Phyllis will be remembered by many as a classy woman, always dressed to perfection.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her namesake and niece, Phyllis A. (Tony) Olin, who cared for her in her last years. In addition, her sister-in law, Anita Battafarano; 10 nieces and nephews; 14 great-nieces and great-nephews; and 14 of their children who will all remember "Great-Aunt Phyllis" for her warm hospitality, her large smile, and all her love she gave them.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her five brothers, Joe (Eve) Battafarano, John (Marie) Battafarano, Sam (Eva) Battafarano, James Battafarano, and Albert (Josephine) Battafarano; her fiancé, Daniel Patta; and her nephews, Larry Battafarano and Louis Gaudio.
The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers at Assumption Village who assisted in the care of Phyllis in her last years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, or the Assumption Village in Phyllis' name.
Friends may call Friday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to Mass.
