GEORGETOWN, S.C. - Queenie Ellen Howell, 94, passed away quietly at her home in Georgetown, on Dec. 29, 2015.
Queenie Ellen Turton was born in London on Dec. 8, 1921.
She served in the British Army during World War II and lived through the blitz where London sustained three months of nightly bombing. She went on to serve as the first female officer of the Ilford branch of the British Legion and was their secretary until she moved to the United States.
After meeting her husband, George Albert Howell, in London, the two were married in October of 1957, at St John's Episcopal Church in Youngstown. While Mrs. Howell made her home in Ohio, she returned many times to England, making several transatlantic crossings on the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and Sylvania historic ocean cruise liners.
Queenie loved getting together with her English GI bride friends, where conversation frequently turned to life in England. She was an avid reader; an accomplished seamstress, working at one time for the queen's dressmaker; and always enjoyed a lively discussion on a variety of topics. Her grandchildren were the loves of her life and she enjoyed attending horse shows and baseball games to cheer them on. She also instilled a love of England and a respect for its history in both of her grandchildren.
Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by her husband, George Howell; and her sisters, Maisie (Leslie) Jarman and Elsie (Leslie) Rawlinson, both of London.
She is survived by her daughter, Vanessa Ann Shamrock of Georgetown; her granddaughter, Kaytlin Mary Shamrock of Surfside, S.C.; and her grandson, Patrick George Shamrock of West Ashley, S.C. She is also survived by her nephew, Peter (Patricia) Jarman of Chelmsford, England, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mrs. Howell will be remembered in a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at St. James Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., Boardman.
Friends may visit with the family in the church parlor beginning at 10 a.m.
While Queenie spent many wonderful years in the United States, England was always the country of her heart and a portion of her ashes will be interred at the Garden of Remembrance, St. Peter's Church, Aldborough Hatch, England.
Contributions can be made to the Salvation Army in her memory.
Professional arrangements are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel.
