AUSTINTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Bishop George V. Murry on Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Austintown, for Rev. Father John F. Lyons, 90, Pastor Emeritus of St. Joseph Parish, who entered into eternal life Saturday afternoon.
Father Lyons was born June 4, 1921, in Skeghard, Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, Ireland, the son John and Catherine Johnson Lyons.
He attended St. Patrick and Mercy grade schools in Ballyhaunis, St. Jarlath High School and College in Taum, County Galway and St. Patrick Seminary, Carlow, Ireland.
Father Lyons was ordained June 2, 1946, by Bishop Thomas Keough at St. Patrick's, Carlow, Ireland.
His first assignment in the Youngstown diocese was as associate pastor of St. Ann Briar Hill in 1947. He was also associate pastor at East Liverpool St. Aloysius and Austintown Immaculate Heart of Mary. He was pastor at Immaculate Conception, Welllsville and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, McDonald before becoming the founding pastor of Austintown St. Joseph in 1966. He retired in July of 1990.
Father Lyons had served the diocese on the clergy conference Committee, the priests senate, the diocesan Catholic Charities board and was a former dean of Mahoning North and the first recipient of the Diocesan Outstanding Service in Catechetics Award.
Father Lyons was always proud of his Irish heritage and was active in local Irish clubs and events, such as the Ancient Order of Hibernian's and the Mahoning Valley Gaelic Society. In 1988, Father Lyons and Monsignor Thomas Kelly were honored as the Marshals of the Mahoning Valley's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. In 2001, Father Lyons was further honored being named the Ancient Order of Hibernian's "Irish Man of the Year."
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Nellie and Mollie Lyons and Norine Webb; two brothers, Patrick and Richard Lyons; and his lifelong friend, Monsignor Thomas Kelly, with whom he came to this country and shared a home in Austintown.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday morning from 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. at St. Joseph Church.
