YOUNGSTOWN- Services will be Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown for Richard P. "Dick" Gallagher Sr. age 80 who died suddenly Wednesday morning of an apparent heart attack, at St. Elizabeth E.R. after being stricken at his home.
Dick was born September 28, 1926, in Youngstown, the son of Frank K. and Laura Dumas Gallagher.
He had worked as a dispatcher for Ohio Edison for 20 years, and later as an electrician with the I. B. E. W. Local # 534 before retiring. Dick was proud of his service as a Navy Veteran of W.W.II.. Following the war he reinlisted in the Naval Reserves as a Seabee, retiring after 25 years. He continued as a dedicated member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Navy Seabee Veterans, Island # 8 of Youngstown, and the American Legion.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed golf. He was a member of the Lowellville Rod and Gun club, the N. R. A., and had golfed in the Struthers VFW golf league.
Mr. Gallagher was active in Scouting as a Troop Leader for over 25 years. For his years of dedicated service he was awarded the Silver Beaver award, the highest honor bestowed by the Boy Scouts of America.
He and his wife Jean were longtime members of St. Patrick Church, where Dick had served as an usher.
As a Master Mason Dick was a member Wick Lodge # 481 in Youngstown, where he served as the Prep Room Stewart. He was a member of the Al Koran Shriners Temple in Cleveland, and its Royal Order of Jesters. He had been a faithful member of the Youngstown Shrine Club, where he served as its president in 1998, its social chairman, head cook, and was a hospital van driver for 14 years.
Dick is remembered as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather by his wife the former Jean R. Zimmerman whom he married November 5, 1949, four daughters, Laura Don Durkin of Youngstown, Kathy Lloyd Haas of Youngstown, Toni Dan Karas of Struthers, and Patty Jeff Overly of Boardman, two sons Rick Helen Gallagher of Youngstown, and Michael Karen Gallagher of Olmsted Falls, two brothers, Joe Gallagher of Struthers, and Frank Grace Gallagher of Youngstown, seventeen grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Anthony, and a great granddaughter Lyndsi Haas.
Friends may call from 2 PM to 7 PM Sunday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, where a Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 PM.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to the Youngstown Shrine Club in Dick's memory.
