AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church for Rita A. Matyi, 83, who passed away Saturday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center Boardman.
Rita was born Oct. 16, 1929, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Michael and Anna Granchie Bucko.
Rita graduated from South High School and attended Youngstown College.
She was owner of Merle Norman Cosmetics in the Southern Park and Eastwood Malls. Rita was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America and was Grand Regionant for many years. She was also a lifetime member of the Girard Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2172, where she was past president. She had a devotion to her church and to St. Anthony. She provided her services and did the stage make-up for Packard Music Hall, WYTV, Powers Auditorium and Kenley Players. She also handed lettered the window signs at area grocery stores. Rita loved the arts, cosmetics, baking and cooking.
Her husband, Joseph G. Matyi, whom she married July 19, 1952, passed away June 1, 2008.
Rita leaves her daughter, Paula Gary Golden of Cambridge; her son, Richard Cheryl Matyi Sr. of Austintown; her sister, Ruth Joseph DeVincent of Boardman; four grandchildren, Amy Frank Tuscanol III, Daryl Crystal Allen Matyi, Richard fiance Tiffany Matyi Jr., and Bryan fiance Marcia Matyi; and a special thanks to her sister-in-law, Mary Grace Bucko, for her hours of loving care.
Rita was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Thomas and Donald Bucko; and her black Lab, Duke.
Family and friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Material tributes may take the form of donations to St. Joseph Church.
Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.
