AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will begin Friday at 12:15 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, 4303 Mahoning Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, for Robert J. Kolar, 83, who died Monday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Robert was born Jan 1, 1934, in Worthington (Yellow Dog), Pa., the son of Vinko and Mary (Peterson) Kolar.
Robert graduated from Worthington West Franklin High School, where he lettered in baseball and basketball. From 1953 to 1956, Robert served in the U.S. Army, stationed in occupied Germany with the Army Security Agency, from which he received several medals and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He later attended Youngstown College.
Robert was a Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and was an avid and talented bowler and golfer. He bowled a 298 and shot three holes-in-one, the most recent at nearly 80 years old. He also managed Austintown Little League baseball when his sons were playing.
He was a charter member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Austintown, where he attended adoration every Tuesday and was a collection counter. He made the Youngstown Men's Cursillo 21 in 1974. He was also a member of the Saxon Club. Robert worked in a Youngstown Steel Mill and then the U.S. Postal Service where he retired after 30 years as manager of Budget and Accounting. For a short while, he also worked evenings and weekends in a TV repair shop on Mahoning Avenue.
"Bob" leaves his wife of 26 years, the former Rochelle "Rae" Patton, whom he married in 1991 at St. Patrick's Church; three sons, Robert Jr. (Juliee) of Locust Grove Ga., Mark (Kelli) of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Anthony (Danielle) of Plainfield, Ill.; three grandsons, Ryan (Brittany), Harrison and Jack; three granddaughters, Alexandra (Raymond) Bogdon, and Madison and Karagan Kolar; and a great-grandson, Julian Bogdon. He also leaves three sisters-in-law, Cathy Kolar, Gert Zell and Rita Patton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers John and Jack; and sister Katherine Barber.
Family and friends may call Thursday, June 22, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
