AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will begin Thursday, at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, for Robert J. Kopey, 78, who died Saturday morning at Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
Robert was born Jan. 28, 1939, in Youngstown, the son of John and Mary (Lucas) Kopey.
He was a 1956 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Robert worked as an autoworker for General Motors for 32 years until retiring. He was a member of the Eagles 3298, the Saxon Club and the Croatian Club.
Robert was a huge Cleveland sports fan, especially the Indians and the Browns. He enjoyed golfing, baking, and most importantly, watching his grandchildren play sports.
Robert's wife, the former Marie Niznik, whom he married Nov. 10, 1973, died Aug. 4, 2011.
He is survived by his son, Bob (Stephanie) Kopey of Youngstown; two grandchildren, Bobby and Lydia Kopey; and several nieces and nephews.
Robert was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Kopey.
Family and friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.
