AUSTINTOWN - There will be services Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, and at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church for Robert B. Sturgeon, 78, who passed away Tuesday afternoon at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
Robert was born Oct. 21, 1927 in Youngstown, the son of Vincent and
Josephine Jones Sturgeon.
He was a 1946 graduate of South High School and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific during WWII. He began his work career at Truscon Steel, where he had worked for three
years, and also served on the Youngstown Police Department for three years. He later completed his apprenticeship and became a journeyman for Sheet Metal Union Local No. 33. He was a founder of the Sheet Metal Pension Plan,
and had served as a trustee, recording secretary and vice president of the union before retiring. He was a member of St. Joseph Church and its Men¹s Club. He was also a member of the Saxon Club, Catholic War Veterans John J. Buckley Post No. 1292, American Legion Post No. 301, VFW Post No. 14000 and the Curbstone Coaches and was a charter member of Austintown Eagles Aerie No. 3298. He enjoyed cooking, golf and bowling, was a member of several Leagues, and was an avid Youngstown State University fan. He had also raced on the NASCAR
circuit in the 1950s and 1960s.
He is survived by his wife, the former, Madeline Olesky Sturgeon, whom he married June 16, 1956; a son, Keith Sturgeon of Niles; a daughter, Lynn Kondas of Boardman; and six grandchildren, Austin, Alec, Ryan, and Reece
Sturgeon and Kyle and Mackenzie Kondas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Vincent Sturgeon; and a sister, Ruth Norris.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association in Robert's name.
