Robert Graffius

July 10, 1931 — December 20, 2011

CANFIELD - Robert Tilden Graffius, 80, died Dec. 20, at home in the care of his loving family.

He was born July 10, 1931, in Youngstown, the son of Richard and Thelma Royse Graffius.

He was a January 1949 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and later served in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Japan. Bob worked as a Field Technician for over 30 years, retiring from TRW in 1990. He then embarked on a 10 year career at Millcreek  Metro Parks experimental farm, where he became affectionately known as "Farmer Bob," retiring again in 2000.

He is survived by the love of his life, Carol J. James, to whom he was married for nearly 59 years. He is also survived by his beloved children,  Darlene Dehler of Boston, Sue-Ellen and Greg Bennett of Rochester Hills, Mich., Cindy and Jim Bachtel of Pittsburgh, Judy and Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge and Bob and Kimberly Graffius of Canfield.

He leaves to cherish many wonderful memories his grandchildren, Elizabeth Dehler, Kristen Oscar, Lyndsay Dave and Adam Angie Bennett, Royse Bachtel, Isabella Miller and Greta Graffius; and four great-grandchildren,  Olivia and Charlotte Bennett, Crosby Ziemann and Finley Pickering.

Bob's younger sister, Mary Lou Ken Walters of Safford, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Margie Brown of Struthers; and many nieces and nephews survive him.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Donald and Kenneth; and a sister, Elsie.
Resourceful and creative, Bob never found a problem too great to solve, or something broken that he could not repair. He loved his home, and the nature and wildlife that surrounded it. Above all, his family mattered most to him, and they are extraordinarily grateful for all he did to enrich and bring humor to their lives.

At his request, there will be no calling hours.

A gathering to celebrate his life is being planned for a later date. The family requests that if desired, donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512, in appreciation of their warm and expert care.

Professional arrangements are made by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
