CANFIELD - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Church in Canfield, for Robert M. Wilthew, 81, who died Tuesday at Hospice of the Valley. Preceding the funeral Mass, prayers will begin at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, 3701 Starr's Centre Drive in Canfield.

Robert was born April 29, 1931, in Youngstown.

He was a 1949 graduate of Ursuline High School. After graduation, he served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Following his service to our country, he returned to his hometown earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics from Youngstown State University in 1959.

His lifelong career in the steel industry spanned management positions at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Kawecki-Berylco Industries and Copperweld Steel. He retired in 1991 after serving as President of Northwestern Steel and Wire, Sterling, Ill.

He was a member of St. Michael Church in Canfield. Robert was a member of many associations, including the American Iron and Steel Institute, American Iron and Steel Engineers and the American Society for Metals. Robert was a former member of Tippecanoe Country Club and an avid golfer, participating in many area tournaments.

He is survived by his wife, the former Vilma (Val) Luteran, whom he married June 23, 1951; a daughter, Melissa (Richard) Tanferno of Medina; two sons, Robert M. (Lois) Wilthew of Granite Bay, Calif. and Scott A. (Kay) Wilthew of Mason, Mich.; three grandchildren, Christopher and Connor Tanferno, and Kelly Houpt; two great-grandchildren, Elisa and Cannon Houpt; and a sister, Sue Ericks of Knoxville, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary E. Williams and father, Robert W. Wilthew.

Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.

The family requests that material tributes be made through donations to the St. Michael's Family Life Center or Hospice of the Valley.

A heart felt thank you is extended to the staff at Clare Bridge Austintown and Hospice of the Valley who compassionately cared for Robert in recent weeks.
