AUSTINTOWN - Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Rodney Gene Cordell, 39, who passed away unexpectedly early Tuesday morning at his home.
Rodney was born April 22, 1971, in Youngstown, the son of Herbert Cordell and Dorothy Childers.
In 1989, Rod graduated from Austintown Fitch High School and in 1993, graduated from M.C.T.C. Police Academy and had served as an Mahoning County Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff. In 1995, he began his 15 year career at the Ohio State Penitentiary, retiring in 2009.
Rod was a lifelong Oakland Raider fan, enjoyed cooking and was an avid gardener.
Rod was always there to help others during their time of need. He had received a civilian of the year award for his courage in saving the life of a man whose automobile caught on fire after an accident by pulling him out of the car to safety and he also received a state award for saving a man?s life at Southeast Correctional Columbus, Ohio. In April of 2010, he saved his own fathers life by carrying his father out of a burning house.
Rod is survived by his loving wife, the former Kari Baechley, whom he married Oct. 28, 2000; and his children, Gaven, Alyssa and Rodney, whom he so adored and cherished every waking minute he had with them. They will miss their father tremendously. He also leaves his parents, Herbert Cordell, Dorothy Childers and stepfather Dana Childers, all of Austintown; his brothers, Tommy Brenda Cordell Kachelries of Hubbard and Dwayne Childers of Salem; two sisters, Kim Rosa of Cincinnati and Cherry Bill Cappianca of Salem; two nieces, Cheyenne Childers and Angelina Cappianca; and nephews, Dakota Childers, Tyler Kachelries, Dean Anthony Diego, Troy Kachelries and Jack Cappianca.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from noon to 12:45 p.m. Friday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to a children?s fund for Rodney?s children be made at any Farmers National Bank Branch.
