Youngstown- Prayers will begin Saturday morning at 9:15AM at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Dominic Church for Rose Anne Slavens, who died Wednesday at the Hospice House surrounded by her family.
Rose Anne was born on March 5, 1927 a daughter of the late Rocco Soldo and Maria Del'Aquila in East Palestine, Ohio. She graduated from the East Palestine High School and then attended Youngstown College of Business in Youngstown, where she was a member of the Tau Kappa Nu Sorority.
Upon completing her business course, she was hired as a secretary at the Automatic Sprinkler Corp. of America.
She later married Russell L. Slavens and had five children. She delayed her professional career to stay at home to raise her family. After raising her children she returned to work and was hired as a secretary at the Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. She left his job after several years and started at YSU as a typist II in the Admissions office. She was later promoted to secretary II and transferred to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, retiring in 1992
Wanting to work part-time because her children were grown, she worked at Baines Deli until they closed, then in the café' at Barnes and Noble and finally at the Pizza Works on Market Street in Youngstown.
She loved cooking, gardening, singing, reading, and writing. She was a member of the Youngstown Writers Club, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, the Sweet Adelines, St. Dominic's Choir, the Newman Club and the Friday Nighter's social club.
She was past secretary of the St. Dominic's Rosary and Altar Society, past secretary of the St. Dominic's Seniors Club. She was also a member of the YSU Women's Retiree group, YSURA, and a member of the Mahoning County Chapter #18 of the Public Employees' Retirees Club.
She leaves five children, Patti Dave Rocknic of Austintown, Michael Slavens of San Diego, CA, Brian Kathy Slavens of Boardman, Kevin Slavins of Wisconsin, and Atty. Kathleen Slavens Tim Robbins of Arkansas; five grandchildren, Todd, Shaun, Ashley, Brian, Jr., and Eden.
She also leaves two brothers, Ben Soldo of East Palestine and Nino Donna Soldo of Clermont, Florida, two sisters, Dina Bozick of Lisbon, and Edie Al Ragghanti of Liberty.
Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Davis and Natalie Ritchie, and a brother Patsy Soldo.
Friends may call Friday from 4-8PM at the funeral home.
