BOARDMAN - Rupert W. Harris IV, 66, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015, at Hospice House, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born June 8, 1948, in New Castle, Pa., to Rupert W. Harris III and Katherine (Buchanan) Harris. "Bob's" childhood was spent in the New Castle area and he attended Laurel High School through his junior year. His family then moved to Howland, where he was a 1966 graduate of Howland High School.
Bob was a Vietnam veteran, having served his country aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger. He retired from Delphi Electric in 2004, where he was a foreman for more than 30 years.
On June 7, 2003, he married Peggy Ferguson, who preceded him in death. They shared a love of boating and spent many happy years together.
Throughout his life, he was an avid boater. Bob's summers were spent at Lake Erie on his boat, "Escapade." Numerous adventures were had with family and friends, whether it was a trip to the Erie Canal or a day of swimming a few miles offshore of Ashtabula. He was a past commodore of the Ashtabula Yacht Club, where he was a member for over 20 years. During his time as commodore, Bob helped AYC to meet the requirements for Ohio's Clean Marina program, an accomplishment that he was very proud of.
Bob also enjoyed woodworking and attending auctions.
He is survived by his two children, Stacie (Jason) Lehman, of Niles and Julie (Ralph) Maravola of Delaware; two sisters, Judy Henry of Solsberry, Ind., and Janet (John) Shaffer, of Las Vegas; brother-in-law Jack (Sue) Senvissky of Warren; two grandchildren, Abbey "Pinky" and Joseph "The Duke" Lehman; and by the mother of his children, Bonnie Harris of Niles.
In addition to his late wife, Peggy, he was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law James Henry; and sister-in-law Catherine Solomon.
Calling hours will be held at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., with a memorial service to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Bob's name to Hospice of the Valley.
