NORTH JACKSON ? Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, North Jackson Chapel Route 45 for Mrs. Ruth Stroup Oblinger, 84, who died Sunday afternoon from cancer at her home, with her family by her side.
Ruth was a descendent of the early settlers, James Russell and Andrew Stroup. She was a daughter of John ?Elmer? and Della Witherstine Stroup and lived in North Jackson most of her life.
She graduated from Jackson Milton High School class of 1943 and from the former Youngstown Hospital School of Nursing class of 1947.
Ruth was in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corp. and served time at the government hospital on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation at Pine Ridge, S.D. She has been included in the National Memorial in Washington, D.C., honoring women who served their country. After returning back home, she was a staff nurse at Southside and then head Nurse at Northside for five years and than returned to Southside as a staff nurse from 1961 until she retired in 1990.
Ruth was a member of the Youngstown Hospital Alumni Association and Oldsters. She has been a member of the First Federated Church since 1937, a member of the Women?s Fellowship Group for which she loved to quilt, a charter member of the North Jackson Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and held all offices and was a honorary member, past member of the Child Conservation League, RFM social club and Warren Scope.
Her husband, Samuel, whom she married Sept. 18, 1948, died April 30, 1984.
She leaves one son, Douglas Rosemary Oblinger, with whom she made her home; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Oblinger of Newton Falls; a brother Charles ?Jim? Dorothy Stroup of Lake Milton; and two granddaughters, Maggie and Samantha Oblinger.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Dennis and Donald Oblinger; and five brothers, Clarence, Marion, Vernon, Walter and David Stroup.
Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
