NORTH LIMA - Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, for Ruth Ellen Slattery, 102, who died Sunday afternoon at St. Mary's Alzheimer Center.
Ruth as born Oct. 14, 1911, in Dubois, Pa., the daughter of Alonzo R. and Laura Elva (Lewis) Hart. She moved to the Youngstown area as a child.
She had worked at the Fashion Barn in the Lincoln Knolls Plaza, a secretary for Keats Heating and Air, and a sales representative for many years for Walsh Products. She was a longtime member of the Immaculate Conception Church.
Ruth enjoyed sewing and often made dresses and clothing for her granddaughters, nieces and friends. She was a multiple award winner at Canfield Fair for her doll clothing. She was also awarded blue ribbons for her pies and cakes. Ruth affectionately was known by family and friends as the "Chairman of the Board." She loved vacationing at her cottage in Conneaut and to travel visiting family and friends and frequently took her children and grandchildren with her whenever she could. She always loved animals, especially her cats.
Her husband, Michael J. Slattery, whom she married Aug. 27, 1931, died Jan. 3, 1971.
The secret to her long life was she never allowed herself to get old and was active in all of her family's lives.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mildred Slattery; 11 grandchildren, Mary Frances Bundy, Michael Slattery, Helen Tepfer, Edward Slattery, James Slattery, Patrick Slattery, Timothy Slattery, Colleen Ruben, Sue Wire, Kathryn Hart, and Carol Borak; 23 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her sons, Michael and Edward Slattery; daughters, Ruth Ann Finch and Margaret "Peg" Slattery; a granddaughter, Patti Ferenchek; great-granddaughter, Sarah Bundy; and her five brothers, Lewis, Chester, Kenneth, Bill and infant twin brother Ross.
Ruth will be sadly missed by her many friends who may call Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel.
