COLUMBIANA - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Salvatore "Sam" D. Maiorana Jr., 86, who passed away Friday morning at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.
Sam was born May 17, 1929, in Girard, a son of the late Salvatore D. and Stella (DeLuca) Maiorana Sr.
Sam was a 1948 graduate of Girard High School. During his time at Girard High School, Sam was a member of the first gymnastic team.
Throughout the Korean conflict, he served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 as an AAA artillery radar and cook. Over the course of the conflict, he arose as a head pastry chef. He was stationed in Maryland in the National Defense of Washington, D.C.
He was an engineer for Conrail for 30 years, retiring in 1994. Sam also put in 25 years with Isley Dairy as supervisor and 10 years with Federal Wholesale in Hubbard. He remained active as a ranger and starter at the Links at Firestone Farms Golf Course.
Sam and Helen were charter members of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, as well as members of the senior citizens' club. He was a member of the Teamsters, Saxon Club, St. Anthony's Bocce League, the American Legion Post of Austintown and the ITAM No. 103. Sam loved hunting, fishing, gardening and was a Browns and Indians fan. His passion was making wine out of a variety of fruits.
Love of family was his first priority. His life passion was to bring a little piece of happiness to someone each day.
Sam leaves his wife, the former Helen Anna Hammond, whom he married Aug. 5, 1950; his children, Salvatore "Sam" D. Maiorana III (Beverly Bennett) of Austintown, Cathy (John) Grossi of Columbiana, Linda (Dan) Bonish of Columbiana, and Helen (Mike) Milne of North Jackson; eight grandchildren, Michael, Katie, John (Denise), Jenni (Paul), Lisa, Nick, Maggie, and Mariana; two great-grandchildren, Alex and Dempsey; three sisters, Virginia Patti of Columbus, Providence Colantuoni of Florida, and Carmella Kramer of Maryland; two brothers, Anthony Maiorana of Girard and Eugene Maiorana of Florida; and two sisters-in-law, Lori Maiorana of Lorain and Donna Maiorana of Youngstown; and a sister-in-law Sandy Maiorana.
Sam was preceded in death by an infant son, Fred; three sisters, Mary (Lou) Esposito, Stella Petko, and Rose (Bill) DeVaul; three brothers, Philip Maiorana, his twin brother, Fred Maiorana, and Guy Maiorana; brothers-in-law Ted Kramer, Ray Colantuoni and John Patti; and sister-in-law Tina Maiorana.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, and Tuesday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church.
Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the Immaculate Heart of Mary banquet hall.
